One of my life verses is, "When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable..." (Prov. 10:19). Another is, "Even a fool, when he is silent is considered wise." (Prov. 17:28). Those verses have particular appeal to me because my natural tendency is to be a man of few words, at least far fewer than my calling allows.

Last month my wife Cindy and I were camped in an inhospitable place called “Boulder Field”, nearly 13,000 feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountain National Park. Suffering from altitude sickness, Cindy had to get some fresh air in the very dark hours of the morning.

Like every other living thing, Churches develop personalities and characteristics that are unique, or at least descriptive of that church. They can also contribute to the library of church trivia for those who keep up with such things. For example, in the world of churches with Sunday morning attendance over 2,000 people:

Last Sunday our choir and orchestra under Troy's leadership, along with Gen. Jerry Boykin, reminded us of the freedoms we wake up to every day, the freedoms we take for granted, freedoms like voting, writing a letter to the editor, wearing shorts, shaving, not shaving, going to church, not going to church, driving to Georgia or Kentucky, even to Alabama!

“How's it going?” That's a common greeting on Sunday morning isn't it? Of course, most of the time folks aren't really asking for an up to the minute status report. In fact, if you do launch into a lengthy monologue of all the happenings in your life, the good, the bad, and the ugly, it won't be long before people quit asking!
