Heidi McKinney
L.M.F.T. Counselor
I have many times referred to life as a series of ascents, plateaus, and descents. Some of the ascents could be compared to a Mount Everest, and some to a hill in a neighborhood. Every climb takes a certain amount of preparation, skill, and equipment. Every climb leaves its mark in the psyche. Some of the memory may be good, and some may be regretful. I had the privilege of growing up on a mountain, and being very aware of the dangers of hiking, and the possibility of being injured or lost. Yet there has always been a pull toward the adventure of what I may find along the trail or at the summit.
I have climbed to the top of Mt. LeConte, as I am sure many of you reading this may have. I climbed with my husband, son and friends. The one rule we had given our twelve-year-old son at the time was, if you climb with us, you cannot complain. He agreed. He led the group most of the way up the mountain and then back down the next day. On our drive back home we asked him his thoughts and feelings on the adventure. He told us that it was the hardest thing he had ever done in his life, yet it remains as a positive memory.
Our best preparation may not actually protect us from emotional or physical pain, yet it may help us endure and persevere. Proverbs has many verses that tell us to get counsel, get knowledge and wisdom. Sometimes we seek these through friends, a pastor, or a professional counselor.
I entered into this adventure with the hope of walking alongside those on this same journey we call life. In this endeavor my husband, son and daughter support me. I find myself drawn toward couple relationships, family relationship dynamics, including step families, and individual counseling with concern toward women in abusive relationships. I also have continuing education credits in Post partum depression and have had the privilege of presenting material on this subject to a MOPS group.
Some of life's mountains, and/or valleys are steeper and deeper than others have experienced. Sometimes we need someone to help us become better equipped in our climb toward the summit and/or persevering through the deep valleys. I hope I can be of some help along your pathway toward wholeness.
